Wy'east Middle School Replacement

Vancouver, WA

Design teams worked closely with district leaders, staff, students, and the local community to reshape this 1970’s-era middle school for present and future student needs. Recognizing the importance of nature, tranquility, and diversity in spaces, the new facilities at Wy’east showcase the possibilities of mass timber in early education design.

With a deep understanding of how visibility and movement enhance student engagement and comfort, designers widened hallways and thresholds to create a sense of openness and flow. Biophilic elements—abundant natural light and expansive outdoor views—foster a feeling of refuge and a connection to nature.

Prioritizing equity, they embraced a “One, Some, Many, All” concept, crafting diverse spaces throughout the school. Students can find quiet nooks for moments of solitude or gather in medium-to-large open areas designed for collaboration and connection. The use of dowel-laminated timber (DLT) ensured noise reduction in key areas like the library and art room. Behind the wood paneling, utilities were carefully concealed to preserve aesthetics and emphasize the wood's natural beauty.

Beyond the building itself, new outdoor spaces extend learning and social opportunities. A secure central courtyard offers varied seating options along with power, data, and water connections, while a large turf area provides a welcoming green space for gatherings. The multi-use commons is flooded with light through wide, double-height windows, and opens onto the grand lawn—an ideal venue for student and community events.

This school isn’t just a place for learning; it’s a vibrant, accessible hub designed to elevate the student- experience while doubling as a dynamic event space for the entire community.
