Bunker Hill Housing Redevelopment - Building M
Boston, MAThe first building of a larger redevelopment site, located in the historic Bunker Hill neighborhood of Charlestown, is the culmination of an eight-year community process for the development and expansion of the Bunker Hill Public Housing Community. This project is the largest public housing redevelopment in the history of Boston and will also be the largest Passive House certified project in North America!
Bunker Hill Housing’s requirement for speed and economy is relying on panelized and prefabricated construction. Fittingly, a long span CLT floor system (7 ply – 8-3/8”) enabled a quick turnaround on the floor-floor erection sequencing and helped enable this project to pencil out. This panel will span from exterior wall, across the corridor, to the adjacent exterior wall – totaling 62 feet in length. The gravity support system will be panelized Cold-Formed Metal Framed stud bearing walls and the lateral force resisting system will be precast concrete shear walls, forming the elevator and stair cores.
The BHH redevelopment will expand the current 1940’s 1,100-unit public housing community into a 2,699-unit mixed income community that replaces and preserves the existing public housing.
