Slate Upper School

North Haven, CT

An independent secondary school featuring a glulam timber structure. The design emphasizes the site's natural features to create an inspiring and integrated campus that complements the existing Slate Lower School. A dedicated entrance and parking area to the east provides a buffer of greenery between the school and the surrounding community. A footbridge leads from the parking area, guiding students across a wetland valley and gradually unveiling the Upper School building.

The building's design prioritizes harmony with its environment through sustainable strategies. This includes optimizing building orientation and windows to maximize solar gain, incorporating high-performance wall and roof systems to minimize energy consumption, and selecting low-carbon, healthy materials that enhance the well-being of occupants and the environment.
