Anahola

Anahola, HI

We are proud to be working with a client that shares our passion for sustainability, and who was willing to embrace mass timber for their home on Kaua'i. Upon completion, the Anahola Residence will be the first of its kind in the state and will hopefully serve as a model for many projects to come.

The primary structural system is glulam post and beam with an exposed CLT floor and roof framing system. All of these components arrived at the site prefabricated, pre-finished, and pre-treated for termite protection, which cut down job site waste significantly and allowed for an orderly, phased installation process. In order to maintain a balanced cut and fill, the upslope portion of the footprint is partially buried within the landscape and is able to achieve this condition through the use of extended stem walls which act as retaining walls for the depth of their subgrade elevation, and receive the glulams at varying heights above the concrete slab.

There are three independent Lumos solar arrays totalling 64 panels, producing 24kW of output with 80kWh of battery backup which will enable the residence to operate at net zero. The site gets roughly 50" of annual rainfall, so we designed the roofs with extended overhangs to both reduce direct solar gain and to create a large enough surface area to rely solely off rainwater catchment for primary potable water. The residence also has a solar hot water heating system coupled with small, 4 gallon point of use units at each distribution point in order to avoid the energy demands of a recirculating pump while still providing instant hot water.
