The Loading Dock

Boulder, CO

The Loading Dock was the first commercial project in Colorado to fully utilize CLT. The design concept is based on connection and authenticity. The team wanted to architecturally connect the new building to an existing warehouse and outdoor environment, but also saw the project as an opportunity to set an example for future development. Highlighting the "honest use of materials," the design makes extensive use of exposed wood—including glulam beams and columns, CLT roof, wall and floor panels, and a CLT elevator shaft. To create a sleek form and simplify maintenance, columns are slightly raised over slim steel bases. Outside, the massive CLT roof cantilevers beyond the exterior walls, providing cover for the main entry and outdoor deck.
