Multiple Pathways to Graduation, hayu aLqi uyxat Building

Portland, OR

The hayu aLqi uyxat building serves as the permanent home for the Multiple Pathways to Graduation program within Portland Public Schools. This program includes alternative high schools, charter schools, and other specialized educational opportunities for students in the district.
The building features three stories of above-grade mass timber construction and one below-grade level made of concrete. Its primary gravity system comprises glulam columns, beams, and girders, with a concrete slab atop an acoustic metal deck. The gym structure uses open web joists, while the below-grade parking is constructed with reinforced concrete. The lateral system for the above-grade portion utilizes buckling-restrained braced frames.
Students and alumni played a key role in shaping the building’s design. A recurring theme during consultations was the importance of incorporating "the feeling of nature," which has been thoughtfully reflected throughout the project.
