Monmouth City Hall
Monmouth, ORHow do we create a new civic symbol that reflects the character of Main Street Monmouth?
Project Info
In 2018 the City of Monmouth selected FFA for an initial assessment of their outdated city hall. After determining that it would be more cost-effective to replace the building than to renovate it, the team moved forward with the design for the new civic amenity. Within the context of the community and surrounding historic backdrop, FFA designed a two-story city hall with a connecting light-filled single-story municipal courtroom/council chamber.
The FFA team facilitated interactive public engagement sessions with community members to understand residents' needs, and ultimately identified three key themes: Community, Welcoming, and Asset to Town. The design team then conducted interviews and workshops with city staff to understand how they worked, and how they envision themselves working in the future. Based on community and stakeholder input, we designed an interior divided by function and security needs and organized around a circulation core.
Surrounded by farm and wine country, the site rests on pedestrian-oriented Main Street, across from Main Street Park, and one block away from Western Oregon University's Campus. Taking cues from the existing historic character of the avenue, the FFA team recommended compatible architectural elements and materials. A magnificent sequoia tree on the site accompanies a new plaza to welcome visitors. This space will also support festivals and community activities like the Monmouth marathon and their farmers’ market.
Now complete, the new city hall design strengthens physical and psychological connections by building on the unique history and vitality of the area.
