Candlewood Suites Redstone Arsenal
Huntsville, ALPart of the Privatized Army Lodging (PAL) program, Lendlease designed and built this 63,000 SF, four story, 92 room hotel in 2015. This was the first mass timber hotel in the US and the first on a military base. Cross laminated timber was used for the walls, floors, elevator and stair shafts, and roof structure. The general design was based on Intercontinental Hotels Group’s, (IHG) Candlewood Suites Brand prototype and was designed to meet stringent DoD Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection requirements. Although 14% larger than the average hotel in the portfolio, it was completed 37% faster than similar cold-formed steel hotels in the program. In addition, a 40% reduction in crew size was achieved with the addition of prefabricated bath pods and mechanical ducting. This resulted in an overall project schedule savings of 20%.
