Candlewood Suites Hotels I & II, Fort Jackson
Columbia, SCFort Jackson, SC is the site of two mass timber Candlewood Suites Hotels. The East hotel is 86,762 SF, five stories, 146 rooms, and the West hotel is 95,745 SF, five stories, 172 rooms. These were the fourth and fifth, respectively, CLT structures designed to meet the highly restrictive military Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection (ATFP) requirements under the Privatized Army Lodging (PAL) program. This hotel opened in 2021.
They were completed 37% faster than conventional light gauge metal (LGM) framing used on other hotels with the same scope and scale. As with JBLM, the structure is being completed with an 11-man crew, 7 of the crew were veterans and trained on-site. This is an over 40% reduction in crew size and man-hours when compared to the baseline PAL hotel. The use of off-site manufactured bath pods in conjunction with prefabricated mechanical ducting resulted in an overall project schedule savings of 20% to 25%.
