CAMPUS TRANSFORMATION

With its 50th anniversary, the Athenian School engaged Mithun to vision and plan for campus renewal, adding key facilities and strengthening the focus on experiential 21st century learning. Memorable gathering spaces and innovative learning spaces fit within the existing campus while strengthening the character and spirit of place.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP

At the heart of campus is a new Innovation Hall, supporting experiential learning and leadership, and a variety of spaces that encourage informal gathering and community-building. Opportunities for hands-on learning and student-led exploration abound in the industrial arts maker space, multi-use dining hall, student kitchen and outdoor adventure classroom.

INDOOR-OUTDOOR CONNECTIONS

Landscape spaces complete the campus transformation with seamless indoor-outdoor connections framing views of the Mount Diablo watershed. Raingardens and bio-retention areas enliven the site along the original streambed through campus. Site features include amphitheaters and outdoor terraces for dining, gathering and teaching. The open-plan dining hall features 65-foot glulam beams punctuating the glass façade. Outside the dining hall, the terrace roof is supported by 20-foot-tall canted glulam columns.
