Adidas North American Headquarters

Portland, OR

Innovation, performance, and sustainability made mass timber a good fit for Adidas when they expanded their North American headquarters. Both buildings faced unique design challenges, yet both used mass timber to meet the schedule, budget, structural and aesthetic requirements of the job. Design of the five-story hybrid office structure, the Gold Building, leveraged the 30-foot grid of the new parking structure below, combining concrete girders with prefabricated mass timber cassettes for speedy, efficient installation. Utilities run through the perforated girders, leaving visual focus on the wood structure. With a gym, café and community space, the three-story Performance Zone Building was built over an existing parking structure, making the lightweight post-and-beam timber system a smart structural choice while avoiding the need for a seismic retrofit of the garage below. Both buildings relied on prefabrication to meet Adidas’ strict 24-month deadline.
