Bates College, Boathouse

Greene, ME

Bates College, an academically rigorous liberal arts institution in the NESCAC Conference, was in need of a new boathouse for their varsity rowing teams. Replacing the existing boathouse built in 1988, the new facility supports Bates athletics’ elite level of competition, featuring a boat bay, team room, locker and bath facilities and office space.

Prior to construction, our team completed earthwork and erosion control for the site, which is located on the Androscoggin River. Due to the extensive timber-framing on the boathouse, the design-build team built physical mock-ups of the timber-framing on site for quality assurance and review prior to construction. The project took place primarily in the summer, and construction activity was phased to accommodate school activities andevents such as Regatta days. The existing boathouse was demolished upon completion ofthe new building. Our team self-performed the new boathouse’s exterior siding.
