Western Carolina Lower Campus Residence Hall
Cullowhee, NC
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, the Lower Residence Halls at Western Carolina University (WCU) represent a move toward more personalized, community-oriented student living. Replacing two outdated residential towers, the new design introduces right-sized housing and a vibrant central quad, fostering stronger connections among students and encouraging an active, outdoor lifestyle.
The location plays a vital role in shaping the project’s character. Drawing inspiration from the natural landscape, the architecture incorporates materials like stone and wood to create a warm, lodge-like feel that blends seamlessly with its mountainous environment. This thoughtful approach marks a significant shift from the former towers' institutional appearance, offering a more inviting and cohesive entry to campus that enhances everyday experiences for students, faculty, and visitors alike.
Designed to house more than 900 first-year students, the three new residence halls are arranged to support smaller, close-knit communities. Their placement maximizes long views of the surrounding landscape and centers life around a shared courtyard. With features such as porches, fire pits, and hammock stands, these communal spaces invite social interaction and deepen students’ connection to the outdoors.
While the primary structure uses precast concrete, the integration of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) in common areas—along with a commitment to sourcing materials from within the U.S.—reflects the project’s sustainable ethos. The shift away from high-rise living also reduces the university’s carbon footprint, while enhancing the site with permeable walkways and expanded green spaces
