University of Michigan South Quad Residence and Dining Hall

Ann Arbor, MI

South Quad was originally constructed in 1951 as a Men’s Dormitory for the University of Michigan. It is a mainly concrete structure with some steel framing. The central lower levels housed the existing kitchen and support spaces as well as the Dining area on the first floor. The east and west wings are residential, as is the center portion of the building above the first floor.
The new dining center improved and expanded dining operations. It increases seating to 950, and features 10 or more themed food stations, each with its own brand identity and changing menu. The project also included a new two-story Community Center, which incorporated open lounge spaces with game tables, televisions and soft seating to serve as comfortable informal gathering areas for residents. With the expansion of the South Quad dining center, a smaller dining hall in nearby West Quad was re-purposed for much-needed community and study spaces. To serve this larger student population, the South Quad entrance was also redesigned to provide more convenient access from the West Quad and Michigan Union.

The second primary goal was renovation was to create collaboration spaces and update existing residence community toilet rooms. This project included a new cast-in-place, below grade loading dock with shoring adjacent to a residential area. A new chiller plant was provided as part of this project. The chillers serve the renovated spaces of South Quad, West Quad, and the current air conditioned areas of the Union.
