Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library

Medora, ND

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is a learning environment offering an immersive experience through interactive galleries, theaters, and participatory activities highlighting our 26th President.

The design, informed by Roosevelt’s reflections and commitment to nature, utilizes locally sourced renewable materials and advanced energy systems, setting a new standard for sustainable design. The roof structure features glulam beams arranged in a triangular pattern, following the curvature of the roof. Exposed CLT panels form the ceiling, providing the structural support for a landscaped roof over a concrete topping. The curved design required intricate glulam connection details at the beam intersections.

The library invites visitors to engage with Roosevelt’s legacy and values, emphasizing daring, boldness, passion, and care. Located at the northeast edge of a butte, the library preserves diverse habitats and supports conservation research while providing spaces for educational walks, leisure, and recreation. Visitors can explore adventurous paths connected to nearby trails and several small pavilions that offer contemplative nooks and expansive vistas, reflecting Roosevelt’s environmental stewardship and civic engagement. It stands out as the only carbon-neutral presidential library, harmonizing with the surrounding ecology and serving as a model of self-sufficiency.
