Place Maillardville Community Centre

Coquitlam, BC

The Place Maillardville Community Centre in Coquitlam, British Columbia, is a 20,000-square-foot facility completed in 2022, replacing an outdated centre that no longer met community needs. Designed by Taylor Kurtz Architecture + Design (TKA+D), the building emphasizes sustainability with its fossil fuel-free, all-electric operation and extensive use of mass timber construction including a striking gymnasium constructed entirely of mass timber from floor to ceiling.

Paying homage to its historic ties to Laval Square, the centre incorporates timber seating elements that reflect the area’s milling and logging heritage. A lush garden enhances the public space, celebrating the community’s rich cultural history.

This state-of-the-art facility not only serves as a functional and welcoming space but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability. Its innovative use of mass timber reduces the building’s carbon footprint while providing a modern example of environmentally responsible design.
