Mountain Line Transit Center

Flagstaff, AZ

To meet Flagstaff, Arizona's growing transit service demands, Mountain Line sought HDR’s expertise for its new Downtown Connection Center. Phase one completes the construction of the new building alongside the continuation of the existing 11-bus bay connector to increase connectivity throughout the city and provide purpose-driven spaces for riders and staff alike. The Mountain Line Connection Center in Flagstaff, Arizona, will soon be one of the first buildings in Arizona to be designed using mass timber. To meet the city's growing transit service demands, Mountain Line worked with HDR for their extensive background in transportation engineering and design. Phase one involves constructing the new building and extending the existing 11-bus bay connector, enhancing city-wide connectivity and creating functional spaces for both riders and staff.

This project will use a 3-coat protective coating system throughout the whole building and add a permapost treatment just at the front entry canopy. Timberlab came up with the idea to create a prefabricated wood ledger assembly to avoid the challenges we have had in the field installing ledgers on CMU walls in the past. The ledgers will be fully assembled with countersinks, bolts, plugs, and a moisture barrier before being set by the mason in 8’ units. Our digital construction team did the legwork to prepare the drawings for fabrication and installation on the ledgers. Although this product still needs to be installed, we hope it will be a good improvement for future jobs using this construction style.
