H.E. Butt Foundation Campus

San Antonio, TX

The H. E. Butt Foundation, known for its legacy of hospitality, community engagement, and architectural excellence in rural areas, sought to establish an urban headquarters in San Antonio. This new headquarters aims to bring together individuals from diverse demographics and neighborhoods, redefining their understanding of the term "neighbor."

The H. E. Butt Foundation has opened an office and convening space in San Antonio. Established in 1933, the Foundation focuses on cultivating wholeness in individuals and institutions to help transform communities throughout Texas. Much of their work has historically concentrated in the Texas Hill Country, where they operate camps and retreats in the Frio River Canyon. These programs will continue to be offered, with recent efforts aimed at strengthening them.

Since 2016, the Foundation has launched several initiatives aimed at supporting families and children in San Antonio. This includes a capacity-building program that serves approximately 40 area nonprofits, a storytelling program called "Know Your Neighbor" that aims to bridge economic and social gaps, as well as initiatives, focused on mental health and related areas.

The Sunset offices, referred to as “Sunset,” were designed by architect Jonathan Card, who has experience with the Foundation’s Canyon property. While Sunset will serve as the base for their San Antonio work, the Foundation's headquarters will remain in Kerrville, where the Butt family's business and philanthropic activities originated. An extension office will continue to operate in Leakey as part of the Real County Community Initiative, another community engagement program.

The H. E. Butt Foundation aims for Sunset to function as a productive space for their work and to collaborate with partners in San Antonio to promote well-being throughout the city.
