Portsmouth, NHIntroducing a pioneering development in Portsmouth, NH, this contemporary mixed-use project stands as the city's first of its kind. Nestled within a historic setting defined by 18th and 19th century buildings, Portsmouth's downtown district serves as the backdrop for this innovative structure. The site, once home to an 18th-century building lost during the 1960s urban renewal, had languished as a surface parking lot, contributing little to the charm of the downtown streetscape.
In a harmonious blend of modern architecture and respect for the surrounding vernacular, this building emerges as a unique addition to the streetscape. Drawing inspiration from Portsmouth's rich maritime history and shipbuilding heritage, the design pays homage to the city's past as a thriving seaport. The front and back entries showcase timber-framed glass vessels as a captivating interpretation of local maritime history and boat building techniques.
A distinctive feature of the building is its use of wood, contributing to its warmth and character. Prodema, a wood-veneered resin panel, graces the exterior providing aesthetic appeal and enhanced durability. The interiors showcase beautifully grained Douglas Fir. The light exterior trim, made from Accoya wood, adds a sustainable touch, providing increased durability and stability.
At the heart of the design, large vessels at the entry corner and interior courtyard are constructed of hybrid glulam timber merging seamlessly with window glazing. The lamination of Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Douglas Fir aligns with the plane of the glazing, creating a cohesive and inventive visual narrative.
This dynamic space houses a street-level public market, three floors of offices, and underground parking, contributing to the project's multifaceted appeal. The result is a transformative development, infusing vibrancy into both indoor and outdoor spaces, redefining this quadrant of downtown Portsmouth with its distinctive character and charm.
