Stride Avenue Community School
Burnaby, BC
Stride Avenue Community School is a two-storey 4,000 square metre elementary school that will replace the existing school with a seismically safe building ensuring enhanced protection for students and staff. Upon completion, this Burnaby mass timber school will meet net zero carbon ready standards providing a modern and sustainable learning environment. The exposed cross-laminated timber provides a welcoming aesthetic that enhances the learning environment. As a renewable resource mass timber stores carbon, helping reduce the building’s overall carbon footprint in comparison to materials like concrete or steel.
The mass timber components which were prefabricated off-site, reducing construction time and resulting in less disruption for the community. The mass timber design aligns with British Columbia’s CleanBC plan, which focuses on the reduction emissions in public infrastructure.
Mass timber is increasingly used in school projects due to these advantages, setting a precedent for sustainable and efficient construction in educational facilities.
