Altitude

Portola, CA

Altitude’s design goals were to create a celebratory atmosphere which reflected the region’s characteristics while elevating the architectural sophistication of the area. Glulam beams, cedar siding, and simple detailing created both a familiarity for all to understand while also expressing a dramatic architectural language which met the triumphant moment for the developer and client.

The facility was an immediate success drawing high praise from the neighboring community, and dramatically increased visits to the area with Altitude as a central focus. The facility has also won several architectural awards. The simple wood design and its balanced and symbiotic relationship with masonry and steel remains a central discussion topic for all the enjoy the facility.

Extensive use of glulam beams, rafters, and dimensional lumber purlins defined the facility's structural bays and floor plan layout. Great care was taken in detailing to utilize western red cedar siding set in contrast to masonry and steel-clad walls. Timber trelliswork draws inspiration from the region's forests.

With clear understanding of code and structural requirements from design conception few challenges presented themselves regarding execution of the timber structure. Material was easily sourced and with labor familiar with wood installation techniques the construction was very efficient.
