Shady Brook Office Building
Dallas, TXThe Shadybrook Office Building boasts a distinctive design integrating structural elements, materials, and key features that emphasize sustainability, user well-being, and environmental harmony. Structural System Design: The building features a robust four-story exposed cast-in-place concrete structure. Notably, the upper levels showcase nine-foot-deep cantilevered slabs, creating covered exterior walkways enveloping the building. This innovative design eliminates interior circulation spaces, optimizing the usable area. The circulation corridors, stairs, and elevator lobbies are externalized, reducing energy consumption required for air conditioning. Structural Materials: An Accoya wood brise soleil encases the entire building, offering varying densities based on solar orientation, mitigating solar heat gain and glare. Galvanized steel structures frame the exterior, including a north-side stair tower and porches on the south. Large planters and wood benches support native flora, enhancing the biophilic-infused exterior spaces.
Key Features:
-Biophilic Design Integration: The building prioritizes biophilic design principles, incorporating natural elements and exterior spaces for users' well-being. Cantilevered walkways and terraces on each level, adorned with wood benches, planters, and native trees, create inviting spaces for relaxation and interaction.
-Environmental Sustainability: Several sustainable strategies are integrated, including bird-safe patterned glass, exterior circulation corridors, and passive design elements like the wood brise soleil, reducing energy demands and promoting a healthy indoor environment. Stormwater management is addressed through bio-swales planted with horsetail reed and bald cypress trees, effectively filtering rainwater before entering the drainage system.
-Contextual and Neighborhood Integration: The building stands as part of a larger development project aiming to revitalize the surrounding Dallas neighborhood. Its design embraces the neighborhood's evolution, serving as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and urban development.
Overall, the Shadybrook Office Building stands out for its innovative structural design, integration of sustainable materials and practices, and a commitment to fostering a harmonious relationship between users, the building, and the evolving urban environment.
