Private Security Building
South San Francisco, CAThis project resulted from close collaboration with the design team to deliver a 17,000-square-foot addition to an office campus. With a striking butterfly roof and sloping diagonal valley beam, this building demands precise coordination and advanced modeling to accommodate its unique geometry. The structure’s warm Douglas Fir glulam frame and cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof, complemented by extensive glazing, create a biophilic workspace. With early collaboration, the project team has ensured an uncluttered ceiling aesthetic, concealing electrical and sprinkler systems above the CLT panels.
The new building, prominently positioned at the campus entrance, will feature a public lobby, security offices, emergency operations center, and a four-vehicle apparatus bay. Using SFI- and PEFC-certified wood sourced and manufactured in the Pacific Northwest, Timberlab will fabricate the beams and columns at its Portland, Oregon facility, transporting them to the site for construction beginning in spring 2023.
The building is designed to achieve ambitious sustainability targets, aligning with the Roche 2050 Zero Emissions Goal, Net Zero Energy standards, LEED Gold certification, and Fitwel 2-Star rating. The project team uses a highly collaborative project delivery model and target-value design to balance design and performance goals within budget constraints.
