Poplar Hall
Appleton, WIArchitects chose wood for this multi-use venue because they wanted a distinctive yet versatile space that could be configured for a variety of events, including weddings, receptions, conferences and concerts. The two-story contemporary design features cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels, exposed glulam columns and beams, and tongue-and-groove structural roof decking. On the exterior, a dramatic, sloped roof cantilevers to provide shaded outdoor areas. Inside, an open staircase leads to the main event space, where 25-foot floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the Fox River. Having been tasked to appeal to diverse groups of people for many purposes, Poplar Hall demonstrates that good design can achieve multiple goals when driven by considerations for the human experience and thoughtful materiality.
