Candlewood Suites Hotel, Joint Base Lewis McChord
Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WAAt 74,000 SF, five stories, and 127 rooms, this hotel was the third mass timber hotel designed and completed by Lendlease for the PAL program. This was also the first hotel to use American produced cross-laminated timber (Smartlam, Columbia Falls, MT).
This, the third CLT structure in the PAL portfolio to meet the highly restrictive military Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection (ATFP) requirements was completed in 2019. It was completed 37% faster than conventional light gauge metal (LGM) framing used on other hotels with the same scope and scale using only an 11-man crew (7 of the crew were veterans and trained on-site) resulting in a 40% reduction in crew size and man-hours when compared to the baseline Privatized Army Lodging (PAL) hotels. Utilizing bath POD's and prefabricated mechanical ducting achieved an overall project schedule savings of 20%.
