Asa Mercer International Middle School

Seattle, WA

This new multi-story middle school of 175,000 square feet will replace the existing buildings on the site, offering a contemporary learning enviroment for 1,000 students in grades 6-8. The glass-encased entry showcases the building's mass timber and steel framing, welcoming student into 38 classrooms and labs; a mass timber framed library; two music rooms; an art/project lab; a gymnasium and associated PE spaces; a dining commons; a learning commons; offices; and other support and building infrastructure spaces.

A three-story mass timber classroom wing will be constructed of CLT decking, glulam beams, and columns, while a two-story mass timber spine with sloping glulam columns ties the three distinct zones of the school together. Light framed wood used at the southern building around the gymnasium was an early value engineering change. The steel-framed portions of the building occur at the commons and gymnasium. The lateral system light is comprised of stud shear walls, a steel-braced frame, and a moment frame.
